Each shell was husked apart<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by calloused fingertips and the ripe tongue<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">was torn outward and flipped end over end<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">across the ancient sun to fall in her basket.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">She was even older than the river and measured<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">her age by fossilized sediment beds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">When she rose up to greet the stranger, she<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">stood like a black, gutted-out coastal tower,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and he, who had passed over the yielding delta,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">stepped forward, channeling the divining rod<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">of his mind into her subterranean lake<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">of inner life.
