{"id":150,"date":"2018-07-11T10:45:25","date_gmt":"2018-07-11T14:45:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canterburyenglishtefl.com\/artsblog\/?p=150"},"modified":"2020-12-22T07:24:09","modified_gmt":"2020-12-22T12:24:09","slug":"bedlam-ship-graveyard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canterburyenglishtefl.com\/artsblog\/sanlucar-delta-poems\/bedlam-ship-graveyard\/","title":{"rendered":"Bedlam Ship Graveyard"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0 Bedlam Ship Graveyard<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">A woman dressed in summer sits above<br \/>\nthe sandy strip of beach, where rusting ships<br \/>\nlie stranded, sinking slowly in the sand.<br \/>\nA mischievous breeze rests from playing tag<br \/>\nwith graveyard flags and gusts inside the pastel<br \/>\nfolds of her floating and snapping cotton dress.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The breeze is only a prelude to nine<br \/>\nsinging horsemen who appear in clouds of sand,<br \/>\ntheir horses dancing nimbly through flotsam<br \/>\nand jetsam, while she dreamily observes<br \/>\nthe swarthy, galloping men as they flit<br \/>\nbetween the peeled whites of her almond sighs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">She laughs, and dips her satin wing of hair<br \/>\nin radiant greeting, which expands in waves<br \/>\ntowards the rusting entrails of beached ships.<br \/>\nThe men reign in their steaming, glistening steeds<br \/>\nand call her a dew drop. She sighs and throws<br \/>\na leg onto the wall, then evaporates.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Her beauty charms a squall, who from across<br \/>\nthe delta sends a stormy messenger.<br \/>\nThe horsemen wheel from her, leaving tenor<br \/>\nvoices, which ebb away as wind reaps speed<br \/>\nfrom sea heat, hurtling straight towards Rocio,<br \/>\nwhile from the arena, ragged flags salute.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">She leans far back on spread arms, an Egyptian<br \/>\ncross dangling over the cleavage of her rising<br \/>\nand falling sand dune breasts. The bliss of sun<br \/>\nand heat wets copper skin with beads of sweat<br \/>\nand she knows nothing of the stinging breeze,<br \/>\nflung like an arrow from across the bay.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It swerves between two yielding sentinels<br \/>\nwhose drooping pennants snap straight out, while she<br \/>\nlanguidly uncrosses sun drenched legs and jumps<br \/>\ninto a sudden wind.
