Preparing your TEFL Start Date
Your place in the program is 100% reserved once you have paid the deposit. Your place in a specific month is only 100% reserved after you:
1) Send us a copy of the visa in your passport, as soon as you receive it.
2) Send us your flight arrival details (please do this as soon as you book it).
3) We check with the program director to see if there is space in the month you want to take the TEFL program. We can only allow a maximum of 9 students each month, because of the high quality of our program and student to teacher ratio. If there is space, then your spot is reserved and the place is yours.
4) If there is no space for the month you have chosen:
a) We place you on the waiting list for that specific month.
b) When you arrive in Madrid, you can start the Spanish program as soon as the day after you arrive.
c) You attend the scheduled orientation start date for the TEFL program that you are on the waiting list for.
i) This is when we know if one, or more of the nine students has dropped out or doesn’t show up and you are then in (there is about a 50% chance that this could happen).
ii) If all nine students are there (no dropouts), then you continue with the Spanish course during the next four weeks, as well as being available for easy to teach kids classes in the afternoons, and then you start the next TEFL program four weeks later.
Preparing your Madrid Lifestyle Start Date:
1) Send us a copy of the visa in your passport (please do this as soon as you receive it).
2) Send us your flight arrival details (please do this as soon as you book it).
3) Once you have received your visa you can fly to Spain at any time. If you arrive a few weeks before the next scheduled orientation date and you would like to start the on-site Spanish course and/or start to receive class offers before orientation, please email infotefl@canterburyenglish.com and let us know and we will arrange it.
4) If you would prefer to wait until the next Orientation date and dedicate your time to apartment / room hunting during the weeks before your Orientation date, then that is also fine.
5) Your program will officially start on your Orientation day.
TEFL & Madrid Lifestyle: Confirming your Orientation Date
1) Once you’ve send us your flight information, you will receive an email confirming your Orientation date, which will be the next Orientation date on the above table after you arrive.
2) Sometimes we will schedule an Orientation, specifically for you, a day or two after you arrive in Madrid.
TEFL & Madrid Lifestyle Orientation: Tuition Payment Information
1) You will make the cash payment to pay for your tuition fee for:
a) The Madrid Lifestyle Program minus the deposit (1.970€-600€) = 1.370€ at orientation.
b) The One Year Study Abroad Program with TEFL and Spanish minus the deposit (3.140€-600€) = 2.540€ at orientation.
2) We cannot run an orientation session, nor can you attend the on-site Spanish Program and get you started with classes until you have completed your full tuition payment. We also need to confirm to the Spanish Consulate of your country, the Foreign Ministry & Education Ministry of Spain that you have arrived, paid your full tuition and started our program.
3) Because we only accept Euros for this payment, we suggest that before you leave your country, you have your bank change your currency into Euros to pay for your tuition.
a) If you use an ATM from a Spanish bank in Madrid to withdraw from your foreign bank to pay your tuition fee, you will often have to pay a high percentage in transaction fees (for example, recently a new US program participant mentioned that Bank of America charged him 25% to withdraw money in Spain from an ATM for his tuition).
b) ATM’s in Spain usually have a daily limit of 300 € (check with your bank for your limit withdrawing from a bank in Spain), and so if you arrive the day before orientation (many people do) and you haven’t brought the tuition payment with you in Euros from your home country, then you will have to wait for the next month’s orientation. This is not advisable, because we try to start setting you up with classes as early as the first day of orientation.
4) And don’t forget, thanks to the Canterbury English giving back to you and the community philosophy, this is a one-time payment with lifetime free tuition renewal benefits (visa renewal costs are 600€, but Spanish Program tuition is free from the second year onwards).
Congratulations, you have planned an amazing year for yourself! As long as you prepare well for your trip, everything will go smoothly and don’t forget, we are here to take you through the whole process.
